Music and Math Connection
Sixty-Eight members of Kumon from all over
North America attended a showcase at the
Kumon Math and Reading Center at 81st and
Harvard on October 13, 2010.
Brook Fine Arts joined the celebration to
welcome these leaders and exhibit the
conncection between music, math, and reading.

Hayfork Elementary School purchased 50 violins and 20 keyboards. Why? To help improve math and higher-thinking skills in the classroom. “Music is mathematical,” said Cynthia Boruff, the only music teacher of the Mountain Valley Unified School District “We researched this theory and found there are many ways to destroy IQ, but music education (is a way) to increase IQ. Kids who study music also are shown to have higher SAT scores.”

“Math and music have always been considered closely connected in many ways. It is widely believed that students who do well in music also excel in math. Some research shows that music lessons enhance math ability. One theory is that music strengthens the neural cords that transmit information between the two hemispheres of the brains.
It is interesting to know that each of the members of the first place winning team of this year’s Los Angeles County Chapter Math Counts Competition from Palos Verdes Intermediate School plays a musical instrument.
